Folk Dance Coffeehouse Artwork

By Dick Oakes

Coffee Folk Dance Coffeehouses have come and gone, their names fading from folk dancers' memories. There are but few that still cater to dancers in the United States. For many years, folk dance teaching was my avocation, and I taught at many California folk dance coffeehouses.

However, Aitos, Cafe Ămi, Cafe Danssa, Café Shalom, Diedrich's, Calliópe's, Finjan, Gypsy Camp, Gypsy Camp II, Hadarim Folk Cafe, The Herman's Folk Dance House (New York, New York), Horo, The International Folkdance Coffeehouse (Detroit, Michigan), The Intersection, Mandala, The Museum, Newman Folk Dance Center (New York, New York), The Plaka, OPA! Folk Dance Café, The Open Circle, Red Mill House, Scorpio's, The Source, O Theos, The Other Place, The Threshing Floor, Veselo, and Zorbas are no more (although there are groups that meet in churches, schools, and the like that may have kept the name of a coffeehouse).

Enjoy this "look back." ~Dick Oakes
