Folk Dance Coffeehouses
Folk Dance Coffeehouses have come and gone, their names fading from folk dancers' memories. There are but few that still cater to dancers in the United States. Here are links to some of them:
- Ashkenaz (Berkeley, Calif.)
- Folk Dance Center (San Diego, California)
- Pacific Arts Center (West Los Angeles, California)
- Sonny Newman's Dance Hall (Seattle, Washington)
For many years, folk dance teaching was my avocation, and I taught at many folk dance coffeehouses. However, Aitos, Cafe Ămi, Cafe Danssa, Café Shalom, Calliope's, Finjan, Gypsy Camp, The Herman's Folk Dance House, Horo, The Intersection, Mandala, The Museum, Newman Folk Dance Center, The Plaka, OPA! Folk Dance Café, The Open Circle, Red Mill House, Scorpio's, The Source,, O Theos, The Threshing Floor, Veselo (Veselo Selo), and Zorbas are no more (although there are groups that meet in churches, schools, and the like that may have kept the name of a coffeehouse). ~Dick Oakes
